Ovarian cancer often spreads to the lining of the abdomen, the peritoneum, making it one of the most difficult cancers to treat. At Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital in Montreal, Dr. Lucas Sideris leads GETS (the Solid Tumour Study Group), Canada's largest centre for a specialized treatment that combines extensive surgery with Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC): a heated chemotherapy delivered directly into the abdomen during the operation to destroy remaining cancer cells.

The team treats 70 to 80 patients a year with this approach, including 30 to 35 women with gynaecologic cancers. Their multidisciplinary team, composed of medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists, alongside dedicated nurses and research staff, has built one of the most experienced programs in the country.

Research within GETS focuses on improving outcomes, reducing recurrence, and expanding the reach of this life-extending treatment to more patients. The Sampalis Foundation supports this ongoing work.
